Clothing / Supplies
Please send children in play clothes. A child's play is intense,
therefore, dresses, dress slacks, patent leather shoes, clogs, sandals, etc. are
inappropriate, unsafe and confining. Label your child's clothes because as
they are soiled and changed, they need to be readily identified to avoid loss.
Children are to be sent to school with snow pants and boots during the winter
months.
Please label or mark all belongings, especially blankets and shoes.
Please provide a sheet, blanket and a small pillow for your child to use at
nap time.
Please leave a change of clothes for your child in a well marked canvas bag.
Pampers, wipes and powder must be provided by the parent for children who are
not toilet trained.
Daily Activities
Daily activities appropriate to developmental levels include: art materials
and manipulative freely available, music, movement, creative dramatics, blocks,
cooking, reading, science activities and outdoor play.
Outdoor Play
Children benefit from fresh air and exercise as well as from experiences in
the natural world, so outdoor play is written into our daily schedule as weather
permits. Children are not out in downpours, storms, or at temperatures
when wind-chill and frostbite could cause a problem. Children are dressed
warmly to go outdoors. Given the precaution taken, outdoor play is healthy
for children, even in cold weather.
Nap Time
The Department of Social Services mandates that "quiet time" be given to the
children enrolled in the Extended and Full Day Programs. Although the
children are not required to nap, "quiet time" must be observed. For those
children who do not nap, "quiet activities" such as books, puzzles and crayons
are provided. Quiet time is approximately 1-1/2 hours.
Birthdays and Holiday Parties
We encourage parents to bring birthday/holiday treats (low sugar please!) and
to participate in the joy of learning, sharing and planning for holidays and
birthdays. Birthdays are celebrated during snack periods.
Health and safety concerns do not allow the distribution of candy, gum or
commercial party favors.
Toys
Please discourage your child from bringing toys to school. Toys
designed for home play are often unsafe and inappropriate for use by large
groups. Also, young children feel that their toys are part of themselves
and have great difficulty sharing them! Books are generally easier to
share than other possessions and welcomed by teachers. Videos, other than
educational, are not allowed.
No guns, weapons, superhero or war toys will be used at the Center. They are
overstimulating for groups of young children.
Parent / Teacher Conferences
Formal parent conferences are scheduled every six (6) months by sign up. Parent-initiated conferences may be set up at any time. Conferences do not take
the place of daily communication between staff members and parents but rather
allow opportunities for in-depth discussions of their child's development; it is
a time for parents to ask questions, express concerns or make suggestions about
the program. Conferences also provide a forum in which teachers and
parents talk about how family and the Center handle different aspects of child
rearing such as discipline, feeding, toileting and other important issues.
Emergency Closings
The Center will automatically close in hazardous weather or if in the opinion
of the Center Director, other conditions exist which jeopardize the safety and
welfare of the children and staff.
If the Center is already open when such an emergency is announced, parents
will be contacted, but the Center will remain open until all the children have
been picked up.
WFAS (103.9 FM or 1230 AM) will carry announcements regarding Children's
Corner Learning Center's delays and closings.
Please be aware that any school delay can change to a school closing if the
inclement weather continues to become severe.
Holiday Closings
Children's Corner Learning Center follows the "Corporate Calendar." A list of
holiday closings will be given to the Parents upon enrollment of their child.
Important Reminders
Always:
- Keep the Center well supplied with well marked clothing (i.e. change of
pants, shirts, undershirts, underwear, socks, shoes, etc.).
- Notify a staff member of any previous injury the child has before dropping
him/her off in the morning.
- Call the school in case of any serious illness or any other reason for a
child being absent.
- Inform the school of any special needs your child may have, whether it be
a permanent or temporary situation (i.e. medication, special diet, allergies,
etc.).
- Keep the school informed of any changes in address, home, work, or
emergency phone numbers.
- Inform the school if your child is in the process of potty training.
It allows the staff to work along with you.
Although not always possible:
- Contact the school in the event of an after-closing pick-up.
- Please try to make our scheduled "Special Events" held throughout the
year. These events give your child a chance to experience his/her school
with you and these events also give you, as a parent, a chance to meet and
talk with other parents.
Keep in mind:
- In any type of inclement weather, please listen to WFAS (103.9 on your FM
channel or 1230 on your AM channel) to listen for any school delays or
closings.
- To express any concerns or questions you, as a parent, may have,
immediately. Most concerns and questions are easily answered and
justified, therefore, voicing your thoughts can relieve any doubts you may
have. As concerns and questions are welcomed, so are any positive
comments you may have about our program!
- That "Childhood is a journey, not a race!"
